4 November 1772 β 4(?) March 1773
Milan β Leopold Mozart comes again to Milan with his son on Wednesday, November 4. The Salzburgers stay in an inn about 50 steps away from the couple d'Aste (Mrs. Marianne - she usually cooks Salzburg dishes - sister of the secretary of Count Firmian).
The purpose of this trip is the preparation and premiere of the opera seria "Lucio Silla" KV 135.
On December 18, a Friday, Count Firmian arranges a congratulatory celebration for his brother Leopold Ernst, Prince-Bishop of Passau, who has been appointed Cardinal. The Mozarts are invited.
The first stage rehearsal with orchestra for Wolfgang's new opera will take place at 9:30 a.m. on November 19 at the Regio Ducal Teatro. Then the Mozarts dine with Albert Michael von Mayr, the chamber paymaster of Archduke Ferdinand. One day later, the second orchestra rehearsal is held, and the following day, from 5 to 11 p.m., there is a large party at the Count Firmian's house "of the whole nobility"; Mozart lets himself be heard.
On December 22, there is another rehearsal, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. the Mozarts are again at Count Firmian's, Wolfgang plays in the evening. The following day Wolfgang has to play at the request of the royal highnesses Archduke Ferdinand and Maria Beatrice Riciarda, and both have a long talk with them.
The dress rehearsal of "Lucio Silla" takes place on Christmas Eve and the premiere is on December 26th at the Regio Ducal Teatro. Archduke Ferdinand and his wife attend the performance. The opera is repeated 25 more times during the 1772/73 Carnival season. On January 17, 1773, Venanzio Rauzzini sings the motet "Exsultate, jubilate" KV 165, which Wolfgang wrote for the castrato, in Milan's Theatinerkirche.
Leopold delays his departure from Milan because he hopes to find a position for his son with the Grand Duke of Tuscany, but in vain.
On March 4 (?), the Salzburgers leave for good; they are not to see Italy again.
