MOZART AND MUNICH

In 2022/2023 repertoire of the Bavarian State Opera and Gärtnerplatztheater

The life and work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is closely linked to Munich, which he visited eight times. During his first trip to Munich as a six-year-old, he and his sister Nannerl played for Elector Maximilian Joseph III. The second visit followed a year later, in June 1763.

From Munich, the Mozart family embarked on a three-year journey through Europe to Paris and London. On the way back from this triumphant journey, they again stopped in Munich, where Mozart gave concerts at the electoral court.

The focus of the next Munich trip (1774 - 1775) was the premiere of the opera "La finta giardiniera" at the Salvatortheater. In 1777, Munich was again a destination for Wolfgang and his mother on their way to Paris, and they stayed in the city on the Isar River for 14 days. At this time Wolfgang unfortunately tried in vain to find a job.

In 1781, the opera Idomeneo, which Mozart had composed in Munich on behalf of Elector Karl Theodor, was premiered in the enchanting rococo theater in the Munich Residenz, the Cuvilliés Theater. He would have liked to stay in Munich, but again, unfortunately, there was no "vacatur" for him.

In 1790 Mozart came to Munich for the last time on his trip to the coronation of Leopold II in Frankfurt. He gave a concert in the "Residenz" before the enthusiastic King of Naples.

W.A. Mozart's attachment to Munich is also reflected in the Mozart cultivation by the Bavarian State Opera and the Gärtnerplatz Theater.

In the 2022/2023 season, the operas "The Abduction from the Seraglio" (9./11./14. April 2023), "Cosi van tutte" (15./17. Juli 2023), (Bayrische Staatsoper) as well as "The Magic Flute" (15./18./20./22./25. January 2023), and "Don Giovanni" (4./14./16. April 2023), , La Nozze di Figaro (29. June, 2./7./9./13./16. July 2023)and Cosi van tutte (1./7. Januay 2023) (Gärtnerplatztheater) are on the programs.
