Mozart Cities - Members of the European Mozart Ways report on Mozart's stay

Frankfurt

Mozart's stay: ca. 10.8. - 31.8.1763 / 28.9. - 16.10.1790

W. A. Mozart stayed in Frankfurt twice. The first time he travelled with his family from Mainz to Frankfurt during the Great Western Europe Tour (1763-66). The two children gave a total of five concerts, one of which was attended by Wolfgang von Goethe. They then returned to Mainz and continued their journey to Paris.

The second journey, towards the end of his life, took Mozart to Frankfurt for the coronation of Leopold II and was marked by bitterness. He wrote to Konstanze: "If people could look into my heart, I would be ashamed, everything is cold, icy cold". The performance of the Coronation Concert KV. 537 in D major was an artistic success, but not financially.
