Mozart Cities - Members of the European Mozart Ways report on Mozart's stay
Mainz, Germany
Mozart's stays: 3. (?) to 10. (?) 8. 1763 / 31.8. until mid-September 1763 / 16. - 21.10.1790
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself visited Mainz twice during his travels through Europe.
His first visit was in August/September 1763 during the extensive "GroΓe Weser" journey of 1763 -66 to Paris. The Mozart family - Mozart at the age of 7 - stayed in the baroque house "KΓΆnig von England" near the market. His father Leopold gave a public concert at the "Roman King" inn and then travelled to Frankfurt for a few concerts. It was there that the 14-year-old Goethe heard Mozart. Back in Mainz, Wolfgang and his sister Nannerl gave another concert in Mainz before travelling to Koblenz.
Mozart stopped in Mainz for a second time on his way back to Vienna from Frankfurt and stayed at the Arnsberger Hof. Fascinated by the organ builders, the Stumm brothers, Mozart probably played on the surviving Stumm organ in St Augustine's Church. He also gave a concert in the Academy Hall of the Electoral Palace before travelling to Mannheim.
