The life and work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is closely associated with Munich. Two of his greatest works were written in Munich: La finta giardinera, which was premiered on 13 January 1775, and Idomeneo, which was premiered on 29 January 1781 at the CuvilliΓ©s Theatre.
On his first visit to Munich as a six-year-old, he and his sister Nannerl played for Elector Maximilian Joseph III. The second visit followed a year later, in June 1763, as part of the family's three-year tour of Western Europe, which took them to Paris and London. On their return from this triumphant journey, they again stopped in Munich, where Mozart gave concerts at the Elector's court.
The next trip to Munich (1774 - 1775) focused on the premiere of the opera La finta giardiniera at the Salvatortheater. In 1777 Munich was again a destination for Wolfgang and his mother on their way to Paris and they stayed in the city on the Isar for 14 days. During this time Wolfgang tried in vain to find a job.
In 1781, the opera Idomeneo, which Mozart had composed in Munich for the Elector Karl Theodor, was premiered in the magnificent rococo theatre of the Munich Residenz, the
CuvilliΓ©s Theatre. He would have liked to stay in Munich, but unfortunately there was no "vacatur" for him.
In 1790 Mozart came to Munich for the last time on his way to the coronation of Leopold II in Frankfurt. He gave a concert in the Residenz for the enthusiastic King of Naples.
