Salzburg is W.A. Mozart's birthplace and home for two-thirds of his life. He was born here in Getreidegasse on 27 January 1756. He wrote his first composition here at the age of 6 and his first opera "Apollo et Hyacinthus" at the age of 11. He also found his first regular employment with the archbishops of Salzburg. About half of his numerous works were written here. More than 15 monuments commemorate his stay. The Mozart house on Makartplatz and the house where he was born on Getreidegasse are now museums commemorating his extraordinary childhood. When it comes to Mozart, the entire old town of Salzburg is like a walk-in museum. In addition to the museums, the most important sites include the cathedral (baptismal font), Mozartplatz (Mozart statue), St. Peter's cemetery (Nannerl's grave), St. Sebastian's cemetery (Leopold Mozart's and Constanze's graves).
