Paternally, the Mozarts are a Swabian family whose most famous member was W.A. Mozart. His father, Leopold, was born in Augsburg in 1719. It was here that Leopold learned the basics of music as well as foreign languages and science. He remained in contact with his hometown throughout his life. Among other works, he published his violin technique here. It is considered a standard work of the 18th century and contains visionary principles and goals for the education of Leopold's famous son. In 1763, 1766 and 1781, father and son were together in Augsburg. In 1777 the son gave a guest performance in his father's home town and had his first adventure with his cousin ("BΓ€sle") Maria Anna Thekla Mozart. It was to her that Wolfgang addressed his famous "BΓ€sle" letters. Wolfgang's last visit to the Free Imperial City was in 1790.
