Mozartfest Augsburg 2023: "Catchy Tunes"
5 - 21 May 2023
The month of May in Augsburg is all about music: in the birthplace of Leopold Mozart, the Mozartfest takes place from 5 to 21 May. The classical music festival of the city of Augsburg brings top international stars to the home town of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's father.
It stands for concerts in the special ambience of historic halls as well as for inspiring views beyond the city and inspiring views over the horizon.
Melodies in the spotlight
This year, the programme of the Mozart Office focuses on Mozart's many melodies - no wonder that they became world-famous and are still so today. The same goes for his instrumental music, which often sounds as if it was written for singers. As well as opera arias, the programme for Mozartfest Augsburg 2023 also includes symphonies, piano concertos and chamber music, all bursting with melody.
From baroque orchestra to jazz band
2023 Artistic Director Simon Pickel has invited star conductor Vladimir Jurowski and his Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra to Augsburg, as well as world-famous singers Véronique Gens, Christina Landshamer, Bejun Mehta, Günther Groissböck and Mauro Peter, the Cuarteto Casals with actress Bibiana Beglau, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra with Kristian Bezuidenhout and, of course, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin - the orchestra in residence in the city of Mozart. A highlight will be the appearance of baritone legend Thomas Quasthoff and his jazz band with Wolfgang Haffner, Dieter Ilg and Simon Oslender. Mr Redhorn" Nils Landgren will be a special guest.
The Mozartfest Augsburg combines Mozart's catchy tunes with other composers who also have a weakness for melodies. The festival programme combines the fascinating melodies of the French baroque master Jean-Baptiste Lully with Franz Schubert's "Great C Major Symphony", Gustav Mahler's "Song of the earth" and the special creativity of the human voice in jazz.
