The Mozart family – Mozart-Museums along the European Mozart Ways
On January 27, 1756, W.A. Mozart was born in the house at Getreidegasse 9 (Hagenauerhaus) in Salzburg. Today, the house is home to the "Mozart's Birthplace" museum, which is one of the most visited museums in the world. Nowhere else can the spirit of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart and his music be experienced as vividly as in the house where he was born. For a whole 26 years, from 1747 onwards, the family lived in an apartment on the third floor. Mozart spent his childhood and youth here with his parents Leopold and Anna Maria and his sister "Nannerl".
Several of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart's early works were composed in the Mozart apartment before the family moved to the Tanzmeisterhaus on Makartplatz in 1773. In 1856, an extensive exhibition on Mozart's life and work was shown in the Hagenauerhaus, and in 1880 the Mozarteum Foundation set up the museum, which still exists today, in the former living quarters. Exhibits include musical instruments, works of art, compositions and original furniture.
