The queen of instruments plays for the Elector Palatine
Organ walk in Schwetzingen for the Open Monument Day on September 8, 2024
Happy Birthday Carl Theodor! In the anniversary year to mark his 300th birthday, the organ walk is also all about Schwetzingen's Prince of Muses. Although there are only a few works for organ by the local court musicians, there is a rich repertoire of sacred organ literature from Carl Theodor’s time. This year, in honour of the Elector, works by Bach and Mozart will be performed alongside composers from the Mannheim School.
Organ music and the organists of Carl Theodor’s time are the subject of the musical walk and will be the subject of a lecture by Dr. Rüdiger Thomsen-Fürst at Palais Hirsch, where the event starts at 3 pm. The second stop is the palace chapel, which houses Schwetzingen’s oldest organ, the Andreas Ubhauser organ from 1806, before continuing to St. Pankratius, Schwetzingen's oldest church with the youngest organ.
The last stop is the Protestant town church. Performers include Paul Hafner, the new district cantor, and organists from the Heidelberg University of Church Music.
