Mozart arias at the RheinVokal Festival
in Neuwied
Mainz – Villa Musica
The EMW member Villa Musica is going to present arias by Mozart and his contemporaries in a concert of the festival RheinVokal in Neuwied on 11 August: The last elector of Trier, Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony, had a brilliant court orchestra conducted by Maestro Pompeo Sales from Brescia. As the programs for the weekly Academies at that court were kept in the archive, we do know which music was performed there between 1783 and 1792. Mozart’s music played an increasingly important role in the programs towards the end of the decade. We are demonstrating this in our program “Italien am Rhein” in a quite peculiar venue, the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine from the late 18 th century in the historical center of Neuwied. Three young singers are performing arias by Mozart (Ilia’s first scene from Idomeneo and the Susanna Rondò KV 577), Schuster, JC Bach, Sales, Sarti, Cimarosa, Bianchi, and Borghi, all contained in the historical programs from the Koblenz court. The former singing professor Claudia Eder from Mainz will read from the letters of Princess Cunigunde of Saxony, the younger sister of the elector who lived at his court, commenting on the music and the political development between 1769 and 1790.
