Special exhibition "Mozart at the table"

Mozarthaus Vienna | 23.5.2024 – 16.03.2025

This topic is being addressed in a special exhibition for the first time in the worldβ€”the exhibition, curated by Prof. Dr. Dr.h.c. Otto Biba and Prof. Dr. Ingrid Fuchs provides insights into Mozart's private life.

As an artist at home and on his travels, he was often invited to dine in aristocratic, imperial, upper and lower-middle-class surroundings. At home, he has staff for the kitchen, whether he is eating with his family or in the company of guests. He visits inns and restaurants of various kinds, not only to eat but also to talk, play and compose. Even for pub musicians.

If he doesn't want to interrupt his compositional work in his apartment and is alone at home, he has food brought to him. As a composer and pianist, he often used the halls of pubs as performance venues.

In his compositions - especially in operas - Mozart gives ample space to the subject of eating and drinking. In his letters, he describes his dining experiences in detail, in which he sees not only food intake but also a cultural and social experience.
